Fans celebrate GTI premieres at Lake Wörth

More than 150,000 fans celebrated the new Volkswagen GTI show cars at the GTI gathering in the Austrian town of Reifnitz.

The original GTI – in up! form!

The first up! GTI with 85 kW / 115 hp celebrates its world premiere at Wörthersee

Forty-one years after the debut of the first Golf GTI, Volkswagen is presenting a compact sporty car in the format of that original GTI – the production-based up! GTI concept car – at this year’s Wörthersee GTI show (May 24-27). Its concept and performance package recall the first generation of the Golf GTI from 1976. With a curb weight of just 810 kilos and 81 kW/110 hp, the original GTI was a real jock. It sprinted to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and often set the pace in the passing lane with a peak speed of 182 km/h.

The new up! GTI carries on the GTI tradition of lightweight and compact sports cars. Under the hood it has an 85-kW/115-hp turbocharged engine (TSI) with a powerful torque of 200 Nm. Its threshold and performance values read like a Golf GTI I catapulted into the present: weight of 997 kilos, peak speed of 197 km/h, from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds, and classical GTI hallmark colors of Tornado Red and Pure White plus metallic options of Dark Silver and Black Pearl. A new blue shade for the up! is Costa Azul.

The up! GTI – the ten most important facts.

The most powerful up! bears the characteristic GTI insignia: horizontal red stripes on the honeycomb-patterned radiator grill, the GTI logo above, and double black horizontal stripes on the sides above broad sills. Plus black side mirrors, newly designed 17-inch lightweight metal rims, and a large rear spoiler that ensures greater downforce on the rear axle.

The interior, with a sports leather steering wheel, GTI gearshift knob, and the legendary plaid seat covers, marks the up! for what it is – a new member of the GTI family. This vigorous athlete will come onto the market in early 2018 and bring new driving pleasure to its class.
