Small plant, big printer

Tool manufacture at the Slovakian Stupava site has the biggest 3-D metal printer of all Volkswagen locations.

The employees in Stupava produce tools on the world’s biggest 3D metal printer to date.

Some 50 employees produce tools for Volkswagen plants worldwide in Stupava. Since last year, the site has had what is currently the largest SLM 3-D metal printer in the world. The acronym SLM stands for a printing technology that involves re-melting metal powder in a powder compartment using a laser. “The 3-D printing technology is an inspiration for new solutions in construction. It has a big future, because new possibilities are constantly being discovered,” says employee Karol Klepoch, examining an ancillary bracket in the photo.
