Athletes clean up at the Olympics

Volkswagen’s athletes brought seven medals back from Rio de Janeiro.

The German women’s football team prevailed over Sweden 2:1 in the final. As many as five players from Volkswagen subsidiary VfL Wolfsburg played in the match: Alexandra Popp, Almuth Schult, Lena Goessling, Babett Peter and Isabel Kerschowski. Then there was Nilla Fischer, yet another athlete from Wolfsburg, playing for the other side. She was also delighted to win a silver medal.

Silver also went to canoeist Sabrina Hering. She and her team came in second, defeated only by Hungary in the 4-person kayak race. The 24-year-old office communications clerk has already completed her vocational training at Volkswagen and now works in Human Resources at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. Thanks to a special job arrangement for competing athletes, she is able to train and participate in competitions during working hours. Hering was not only thrilled about winning a medal, but also the marriage proposal from her boyfriend – which she accepted without hesitation.

“Seven medals is an outstanding outcome. More was scarcely achievable,” says a delighted Martin Prosik, Head of Human Resources of Volkswagen brand Passenger Cars.
