New member of the I.D. family

I.D. crossover concept car celebrates its world première at the Shanghai motor show

With the world première of a crossover study at the 2017 “Auto Shanghai” (April 19 to 29), Volkswagen is providing an outlook at its next major example of electro-mobility. This concept car is the brand’s first Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) – both a four-door coupé and an SUV – with electric drive.

The I.D. models have impressive new interior environments with a layout, variability, size, and comfort that extend way beyond the standards in their class.

Following the premières of the I.D. in Paris in 2016 and the I.D. BUZZ in Detroit in 2017, this concept car is the third member of the I.D. family – a new generation of zero-emission vehicles with an extended range and a charismatic e-mobility design. The I.D. models have impressive new interior environments with a layout, variability, size, and comfort that extend way beyond the standards in their class.

This CUV from the I.D. family is a sporty, interactive, zero-emission all-rounder, and features an electric all-wheel drive system that is as impressive in the urban jungle as it is on the tracks of a sporty lifestyle. An extended range roughly equivalent to that of today’s combustion engines also makes it suitable for long distances. Like the I.D. and the I.D. Buzz, the study can drive fully automatically. Gently pressing the VW logo on the steering wheel is all that is needed to activate this autonomous driving mode. The steering wheel retracts into the cockpit to form a unit with the digital display and the instrument panel. Laser scanners, ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors, along with cameras, allow this electric vehicle to sense its surroundings and detect other road users.

Like the I.D. and the I.D. Buzz, the study can drive fully automatically.

Volkswagen has set itself the clearly defined goal of advancing electric drives from a start-up niche to a high-volume product by the middle of the next decade on the basis of a worldwide product campaign. The crossover study celebrating its premiere in Shanghai provides a concrete glimpse of the year 2020 and shows what a multi-faceted spectrum these future high-volume models will present.
