Cars up in the air

The cable car in the Bratislava plant is celebrating its 15th birthday. To date it has transported over three million vehicles from assembly to the test track.

It is almost 450 meters long, and riding on it takes around four and a half minutes. We are talking about the cable car in the Bratislava plant. In the fall of 2002, at the same time as the production launch of the Volkswagen Touareg, this unusual facility started operation. Unusual, because it is the world’s only cable car in an automobile factory.

It has been used to transport more than three million vehicles from assembly to the testing track in the last 15 years, so far entirely without incident. This is also to the credit of the ten employees who work in four shifts to ensure that the cable cars run smoothly. These men not only have excellent technical knowledge about their equipment; they also have meteorological expertise and will suspend operation if, for example, the wind is too strong or there is a storm.

Ten employees work in four shifts to ensure the smooth operation of the cable cars. Eight of them have been there from the start.
