World Champions, Right Here in Technical Development

Twins and Wolfsburg natives Sascha and René Treichel scored the title sailing a catamaran in Latvia.

Always sailing close to the wind: the Treichel brothers on their catamaran, "Double Trouble."

Two world champions word in Technical Development in Wolfsburg: twins Sascha and René Treichel (43) earned the title sailing a catamaran in the "Topcat K1" class at the world championships in Latvia. "The world championship title is our biggest achievement yet and one that we’re very proud of," says Sascha Treichel.

He and his brother had some bad luck during the regatta at the coastal resort of Jurmala on the Baltic Sea (40 kilometers from the Latvian capital of Riga). The race committee accused them of a false start – something the Wolfsburg natives deny. Undeterred, they sailed on and beat out the competition in the of the six passes to win the crown in the non-Olympic Topcat class, which is typically dominated by purely amateur sailors.

The Treichels work as developers and have been at Volkswagen for 17 years, ever since they completed their degrees in mechanical engineering at Braunschweig University of Technology. René develops couplings while Sascha (recently returned from paternity leave) develops drive shafts.

Sailing has been the brothers’ favorite sport for 35 years, ever since their grandparents, Rudi and Ilse, took them out on Lake Allersee. They gained some initial experience at the Wolfsburg Allertal Yacht Club, and still remained loyal to the club to this day – although they are no longer able to train in Wolfsburg with such a big boat. The Treichels consider regattas such as the one on Lake Müritz in the Mecklenburg lake district an opportunity for both competition and training – and are not ruling out the possibility of earning themselves more titles. The European Cup is in two years.
